Yes… with some caveats. If you purchase one of our Tiny/Container homes, it will need to be placed somewhere, either on real property, on a pontooned floating deck, or on a trailer. Whoever installs your Resilient Shelter Group home, whether it is us or another contractor, your RSG home needs to be installed on property that you own. If you are purchasing one of our Insertible homes, you need a truck/SUV/Van or Cargo Trailer to insert it into.
Delivering your home from our factory to your home-site is something we are working on being able to do in-house. Right now, however, we can and will arrange to have your Resilient Shelter Group home delivered to your home-site.
We can deliver and place your home just about anywhere. Whether it is a shipping container home or a tiny home on a foundation, your Resilient Shelter Group home is shipped to your property on flatbed trucks. On-site, we typically arrange to have a crane place your shipping container home onto a prepared foundation, and we set your tiny houses onto a prepared foundation with the roll-back truck it was shipped on.
It depends. If you selected one of our fully off-grid models, with a solar package and battery bank, composting toilet, and a gray water filtering system, then no. But rest easy because our design team determines all installation requirements and costs for your unique site, including connection to utilities — whether or not you have existing access to municipal power, sewer and water, or to a private well and septic system.
Absolutely not. A big aspect of enhanced resilience is to limit the amount of energy needed to be passively survivable – and rule #1 when creating off-grid homes is to limit the amount of power required. The absolute best way to do this is designing a home that is able to light itself, heat itself, and cool itself with the minimum amount of energy required. All RSG homes have additional cladding on the roof to keep solar thermal gain down during the heat of the day. In addition, RSG homes headed to warmer and more tropical climates can have additional cladding on the sides to provide an additional layer of solar gain prevention. All RSG homes are thoroughly insulated to withstand heat and cold, and ventilated enough to keep moisture issues at bay while providing for healthy indoor air quality. Our RSG homes are typically conditioned with a highly efficient ductless mini-split heating & cooling system, and we have regional specific options based on your intended location. For example, we offer an optional biomass heater designed in as a backup for extreme heating conditions, and we have additional integrated passive venting for homes headed to warmer climates to aid in exhausting excess heat out of the home.
RSG homes are insulated with closed-cell spray foam. Our base models are additionally supplemented with batt insulaton, while our enhanced models use additional closed cell spray foam insulation. All of our Tiny and Container homes meet, if not exceed, all US energy efficiency code requirements.
RSG homes offer high security potential, and with our optional security shutters, and/or our patent pending hinged porch on both Tinys and Containers – are among the most secure houses in the world. If you are intending to leave your RSG home unoccupied for long periods at a time and are concerned about not just security but air exchange, do know that all of our homes have passive ventilation ability designed into them. This means that when not in use, or during harsh weather, your RSG home can be closed up and secured to prevent damage from man or nature.
No. Shipping containers are constructed from marine-grade steel, developed during the 1930s for its anti-corrosive properties. “Cor-ten” stands for ‘corrosion resistant tensile strength’, and is specifically designed for highly corrosive environments – which is why its commonly used for bridges, ships and shipping containers.
It depends. Our Insertible Shelters do not of course, and a large segment of our Insert buyers choose our products because of the stealth ability inherent in our design. Our Tiny Homes on wheels may or may not require permitting as that varies from location to location, as well as its intended use (parking an RV does not require a permit, but many municipalities do not allow ‘living’ in an RV). Even our Tiny Homes and Shipping Container homes on foundations may or may not require permitting, again depending on your location. If you have 100 acres in the middle of nowhere without zoning, and you set a shipping container in the middle of it that is stated to be for agricultural use…
All that being said – all of our homes that are to be set on foundations are designed to the latest International Building Code. Bedrooms have compliant egress windows, all plumbing/electric/utility/ventilation requirements are met or exceeded, all habitable rooms are at least 7’ in height, etc… If your Resilient Shelter Solution Home is to be placed on a site where permitting is required, then we will absolutely take care of that permitting process in its entirety for you if possible.
Please note, however, that some municipalities simply do not allow tiny homes within their jurisdiction. From minimum square foot requirements to mandating grid-connection and septic connection, some locations are not conducive to Tiny living. Please do your due diligence and find out before you buy property, and certainly before purchasing one of our homes, if what you want to do on your property is even possible.
Getting started on your RSG home is as simple as it gets. In fact, you’ll find our process is very similar to designing a home with a home designer. Simply contact us to get the conversation started, and once you place your deposit, we can put pen to paper and get things rolling. Our design team will get a complete set of working drawings to you, as well as 3D renderings of your project if designed, along with a complete price estimate for your project.
Typically, our complete process takes three to six months, depending on what your want and what your governing municipality is. The design phase and build phase typically take two to three months, but the more bureaucracy that is involved, the longer it takes. Apart from our known models that we produce in volume, each Resilient Shelter Group home is slightly different, and your individual design and selections affect turnaround time.
